Kanaya-machi Machiya
Takaoka City, Toyama Pref.
Takaoka city's unique location between the deep Toyama Bay and the high Japan Alps makes it rich in fisheries and agricultural products. The city has also long been active in the foundry industry and is known throughout the country for its traditional Takaoka copperware. This Hokuriku-style Machiya, which combines the strength to withstand snowfall with the delicacy of Senbon-goshi, is located in Kanaya-machi (copperware handicraft town), the birthplace of Takaoka casting. There are many similar Machiya along the quaint stone-paved street, and the area is designated as an Important Preservation District for Traditional Buildings by the government. The property consists of a wide-fronted Machiya and a store building next to it on the right. There is also a large parking lot at the back of the house, which is rare for an urban area. The nearest Shinkansen station, Shin-Takaoka, is just over 10 minutes by car, and from there only a 14 minutes train ride to Kanazawa station.
