KORYOYA Houses

The traditional Japanese houses listed on KORYOYA are all built before 1950 with the traditional construction method.

The traditional method is the result of more than a thousand years of past carpenters passing down their efforts and wisdoms. As no new houses can be built with the traditional construction method under current law, the high craftsmanship is in danger of becoming a dying art.

Our Vision

The population of Japan is declining, and rural communities are dying day by day. We hope each of the property listed on KORYOYA can serve as a catalyst to help revive the withering communities of Japan. As these traditional houses get restored, preserved, and utilized, we hope that both the tangible and intangible cultural treasures of Japan can be passed on to the future generations hundreds of years from today.

Who We Are

Steven Huang

Hi there, thank you for getting this far into the site. Having worked for Hachise for several years as a photographer and web designer, I find that it is quite a shame (or "mottainai" in Japanese) that despite there being tens of thousands of traditional Japanese houses all over the country, Kyoto has been getting all the attention. Due to the declining birthrate and aging population in Japan, more and more traditional Kominka and Machiya houses in rural areas are left abandoned or unused. KORYOYA is a small business, but I hope it opens up new opportunities for these historical homes throughout Japan.

Please note that KORYOYA is not a real estate company but a portal site that connects the buyer to the local real estate agent and the owner. Please have a look at our Flow & Services section to see the services that we provide.
