Main House and more

Passing through the gate, which seems like it could be watched or intercepted from the sides and above, and climbing the stone steps, a solid main building reinforced with plaster appears, resembling an ascent to a fortress. Although the entire area has traditionally been a peaceful rural region, the grandeur of this Kominka suggests that it was likely the residence of a local influential figure.

Furthermore, during the pre-modern Edo period, the "Tamashima Road," which connected the crucial port of Tamashima in the Seto Inland Sea with the Sanyo Highway, a major artery of western Japan, passed in front of this area. This suggests the possibility that it was fortified in preparation for uprisings by lords or peasants. In fact, across the cultivated fields, the renowned residence of the headman, the Fukutake family, also still exists, and it is a similar type of house.

Why KORYOYA houses?

The traditional Japanese houses listed on KORYOYA are all built before 1950 with the traditional construction method.

The traditional method is the result of more than a thousand years of past carpenters passing down their efforts and wisdoms. As no new houses can be built with the traditional construction method under current law, the high craftsmanship is in danger of becoming a dying art.
