Yukinobu Kominka
Misaki Town, Okayama Pref.
A grand Kominka under a small mountain with the ruins of a medieval castle on top of the mountain. Its sturdy appearance, with stone walls and white plaster, evokes the image of a castle lord’s residence. The family that owns the house descends from a samurai lineage dating back to ancient times, closely tied to the castle, and has remained a powerful local landowner since the early modern period. Scars from swords, left as evidence of a 19th-century riot, can still be seen on the house’s pillars. While extensive repairs are required due to damage to outbuildings and stone walls, the property includes a vast estate encompassing the mountain, along with a large and valuable collection of historic buildings. The house boasts excellent views, surrounded by a peaceful rural landscape, making it an ideal location for a countryside lifestyle. It is approximately a 1-hour and 15-minute drive to Okayama Station Shinkansen station.
