Nagara Kominka
Tenri City, Nara Pref.
The Nagara settlement in the eastern Nara Basin is an ancient area said to be one of the birthplaces of Japan, appearing even in early mythology. In the medieval period, it survived turbulent times as an autonomous moated settlement. Its clustered homes rising like an island amid wide rice fields, along with sturdy buildings featuring earthen walls and storehouses, reflect that long history. Today, the settlement remains quiet and lined with traditional kominka, with burial mounds and walking trails nearby. It offers convenient access—about 30 minutes to central Nara and just over an hour to Osaka or Kansai International Airport.
