Ichinomoto Machiya
Tenri City, Nara Pref.
This Machiya sits in the eastern Nara Basin. It retains traditional features like a battari shōgi (folding bench) and an udatsu (fireproof wall). Though thought to be built around 1940, its design suggests even older roots. Facing the historic Kamikaidō—once a key pilgrimage route to Ise Shrine—the house may have been a merchant's home. Inside, a spacious doma offers room for a workshop or motorcycle storage. A rear building with storage is connected to the main house by a large second-floor balcony. It is suitable for someone who wants to run a shop while living inside the house. Located close to the train station, JR Nara Station is only a 15-minute train ride away.
