Shinde Machiya
Ise City, Mie Pref.
Ise Jingu is the largest shrine in Japan and the center of Shinto worship. The ancestors of the imperial family are worshipped at the shrine, but it is also regarded as the ancestral god of the Japanese people, and has been revered by people of all ranks since ancient times. Pilgrims used to travel along the “Ise Kaido” road to reach the shrine, and this Machiya, with its unique gabled roof faces the road. It is located in the Shinde area, next to Obata-juku, the last stop of the Ise Kaido. The property is spaciously arranged on a strip-shaped site typical of a post town. The interior of the main building has been fully renovated and is in livable condition. From the house, you can walk along the old road and enjoy visiting Ise Shrine just like in the Edo period. It takes just under two hours by train or car to get to the Nagoya Shinkansen station.
