Otomari Kominka
Nantan City, Kyoto Pref.
This traditional Kominka is located in Miyama, a region in northern Kyoto prefecture known for its well-preserved thatched-roof houses. Although the roof is currently covered with tile-style shingles, it was originally thatched. Alongside the earthen-floored entrance, there's also a formal main entrance with a raised platform—a feature commonly found in samurai residences and temples. This suggests the house held special status in the past. It's also rare to find a private walled garden like this, offering views reminiscent of a temple garden, with the surrounding mountains providing a beautiful natural backdrop. There is also a vegetable garden in the backyard. Miyama’s famous Kayabuki-no-Sato village is just a 7-minute drive away, and downtown Kyoto City is about 1.5 hours by car.
