Izumi City, located on the border with Kumamoto Prefecture in Kagoshima, is home to Fumoto Town, a historic samurai district established in the late 16th century on a plateau at the foot of Castle Mountain for border defense. Known as the largest samurai residential area in Kyushu, its elegant streets lined with hedges atop stone walls and well-preserved samurai residences are designated as a National Important Preservation District.
