Yamashita Kominka
Takayama City, Gifu Pref.
The Hida area, located deep in the central region of Japan, is mountainous and snowy, but the excellent wood resources produced there and the harsh environment have produced a wooden construction technique that is considered the best in Japan. These techniques, known as “Hida no Takumi,” can be seen in every part of this Meiji-era Kominka, which is characterized by its strong eave beams, elbows, and wooden planks. The house is well maintained inside and out despite its age. The surrounding natural environment is also wonderful, with the largest shrine in Hida and a famous 1100 years old cherry blossom tree nearby. It is walkable to the train station, and Takayama, the largest city in the area, is only 15 minutes away by both train and car.
