Hagiwara Kominka
Gero City, Gifu Pref.
Hida-Hagiwara, once a post town along an old highway, is a key mountain transit point located between two major destinations: Gero, one of Japan’s leading hot spring resorts, and the historic city of Takayama. Even today, it remains an important hub, with major roads and rail lines connecting inland areas to the Chubu metropolis of Nagoya. The preserved streetscape along the Hida Highway features old sake breweries and castle ruins. This traditional house, with a machiya-style frontage and a rear kura facing “Kura Street,” reflects that history. Gero is about 20 minutes away, Takayama less than an hour, and Nagoya about two hours.
