Asuke Machiya
Toyota City, Aichi Pref.
Asuke, located in the mountainous western part of Aichi Prefecture, thrived as a post town and commercial area but declined after modern times. However, thanks to this, the wonderful houses and streets of the past have been preserved. This seemingly Kura(storehouse)-like Machiya is one such example, and it is designated as a traditional building within a nationally important preservation district. The unique appearance of this house, with its upper floors covered in plaster as a lesson learned from a major fire at the end of the 18th century, is distinctive to Asuke. Notably, this house, with its triangular roof cross-section facing the front, is a valuable and old style originating from the Edo period. From here, you are around an hour drive to Nagoya Shinkansen station.
